Distribution and Selling

Q: Should I work with a sales representative to sell my line?

A: Every designer feels differently when asked this question. Sales representatives can be one of your business’s greatest assets, but the relationship between you and your rep. is very individual. It is important that you find someone who understands the philosophy behind you and your brand and can represent it well. Some designers believe no one can represent their line better than they can so they handle all sales calls on their own.

Q: Can I sell my product wholesale and still have a custom business?

A: Yes, but think about creating a custom or couture line and a seperate line that you will sell wholesale. Key elements such as price points, marketing and potentially fabrics would be different. Buyers may not purchase wholesale from you if they see consumers going to you directly, but, if you provide them with different price points and products you have a better chance.

Q: What do I need in order to be successful at a trade show?

A: There are many keys to success at trade shows. Professional-looking line sheets, marketing your presence at the show prior to the event and bringing the right assortment are among many factors. Be sure to submit thorough applications and review all information available on their websites. It often takes attending the same show several times in order for buyers to place orders so be prepared for the financial investment!
