The intensive training at The Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago emphasizes innovation and creativity in fashion, while providing the student with the professional entry-level skills and technical knowledge necessary for a successful career in the fashion industry. Students are introduced to sewing, flat pattern drafting and draping to provide a solid foundation in the fundamentals of apparel engineering.
Students at the Academy study the global fashion industry’s use of conventional skills and traditional techniques along with their application. Advancements in computer-based pattern drafting, design and manufacturing are taught to ensure student’s current skills remain parallel to the latest innovations in the field of fashion design.
The Department of Fashion Design is internationally recognized for its unique interdisciplinary program within a fine arts foundation. Its nontraditional, undergraduate, three-year curriculum within the four-year degree program instills an awareness of the social, political, and technological forces shaping the 21st century.
